dionysus67's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
dionysus67Human history told as a theological tale, tinged with the usual blasphemous sting by Bunuel. This is a sublime venture into renunciation and asceticism, told with bravura, wit, humor and wry intelligence. The incarnations of the Devil take the usual shape but the leap forward to secular modernization culminates in an ingenious dance sequence that functions both as a confirmation and refutation of Christian theology!ASHES IN THE HOURGLASS's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
ASHES IN THE HOURGLASSAn enjoyable and thankfully brief black comedy by Bunuel that has a memorable ending. However, much like all of his work that deals with religion, it seems dated somewhat. In a world where South Park has made a mockery out religion for nearly 20 years, it's hard to be really impressed by something so tame that doesn't really offer anything new. Still, it's another engaging collaboration between Bunuel and Pinal.Duncan Gray's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
Duncan GrayI'm kind of glad this Bunuel film was cut short; I can't imagine it sustaining its premise for a whole film, and the rushed, tacked on ending is actually the most interesting part. Excellent if you're looking for Cinema under an hour...let the record show that sometimes production woes inspire the best results. An interesting corner of Bunuel's work.Harry Rossi's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
Harry RossiAn absolutely excellent Bunuel short. It's a shame he ran out of money while filming this and had to rewrite the ending, because that is the only part that perhaps feels rushed and not at the same pacing as the rest of the movie. That being said the ending alone is magnificent. Also this might just be me, but I think this is Bunuel's best shot film. Gorgeous to look at, strange and very intelligent. Loved it.ramosbarajas's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
ramosbarajasPerfectly irreverent. Much like Nazarin, Simon tries his best to be as Christ-like as possible without any results. It's Buñuel's way of saying those actions can only be considered obsolete. The ending is great for its nonsensical approach; you can't possibly expect it, but it's so absurd it fits. This is probably the funnest role I've seen Pinal in. Now off to watch her other comedies and musicals.Christopher R. Smith's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
Christopher R. SmithShort film from director Luis Bunuel is a sharp religious satire that makes some profound points with odd, compelling characters; powerful, memorable visuals; and great moments of surrealistic humor - though the ending is a bit unsatisfying.Wee Hunk's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
Wee HunkA much more subtle reflection on faith than I expected. Brook plays him straight, up until the unfortunate ending. It was a bit too heavy handed.smndvdcl's rating of the film Simão do Deserto
smndvdclAn absurdist take on self-imposed martyrdom that only Bunuel's eye, for a certain kind of satire, can really pull off.
